Rants of the week, plus extras - now including an anonymous fucktard in the comments!
On sunday, we encountered a woman driver who was indisputably full of Fail.  Jez had parked outside the co-op, a couple of feet behind a small-ish estate car.  Plenty of room for the car to be manouevred out, especially since she had another two feet of empty space in front as well.  But, as we closed the car doors, she came running up to us.  Apparently, a space that I could've squeezed out of if it was a quarter of the size was far too small for her.  Could we please drop the car back another half mile or so? She was ever so sorry, but had just popped in to the shop to buy a pint of milk, and didn't think any other road users might just happen to park behind her while she was inside.  Because it's not the busiest local shop in the world or anything...

Oh, we silently obliged, but I'm sure the look on my face told her all she needed to know.   Lady, I know parallel parking can be tricky, but if your driving skills are THAT poor, you should NOT be on the road!  Sheesh, but you're giving your sex a bad name.

Rant number two - debt. I have every sympathy for people who get themselves into debt, but a story on the news this morning pissed me off a little.  They began it by explaining how this woman had suddenly found herself 40K in the red, but oh, she DESERVED our sympathy because it wasn't spent on luxuries, but on bills and mortgage payments which had doubled, and OH WHO COULD HAVE EXPECTED THAT?!

Sorry, but no.  Since when have interest rates always remained the same?  And it's not as if we don't have the memory of rocketing rates and repossessions in the 80s (and to a lesser extent, the 90s), is it?  Seriously, what do you EXPECT is going to happen when your lovely three-year fixed rate mortgage expires, and you end up on whatever the standard rate is today?  Come ON people - it's not rocket science!  Stretching yourself for a mortgage is bad enough if you know you can't really afford it, but displaying a level of willful ignorance that'd put an ostrich to shame...?  Nope, you're getting zero sympathy from this corner.

On a less snarky note, last night I gave a talk to our local astronomy society, and it went down wonderfully.  I'm so chuffed with myself.

EDIT - when I tag my posts with either "idiot of the week" or "rant of the week", surely a snarkfest isn't unexpected?  Oh, internet, you make me weep!

I keep using this excuse, but people still tell me I have to learn to drive. Stupid car-oriented society.

I was going to reply to this earlier, but for some reason I got distracted...

Anyway, I'm sure you're not as bad as all that! The main thing is, you're still a learner, and have a good excuse. But yeah, America's a bit more awkward for non-drivers. Stupid car-oriented society indeed.

See, this is the problem. How can you possibly know what I'm like as a driver? In fact, of all the skills that drivers need, I only possess the ability to read a number plate at the required distance (and even that is after laser surgery). I'm pretty sure that I should not be on the roads.

Anyway, whether or not I'm right, I think it's interesting that a driver's licence is seen as a necessity rather than a convenience and that you're considered irresponsible for not getting one (although I do acknowledge that it places an unfair burden on my husband). And yet we're also trying to reduce traffic congestion and accidents.

Re: para 1 - In that case, I'll take your word for it. ;) Are you/have you been learning in a manual or an automatic?

Re: para 2 - That simply doesn't make sense to me, but then I guess the number of americans with driving licences far outnumbers those with passports. Yeah, it's useful, but you shouldn't have to have one.

Just stumbled across this page......and after reading a little, a thought popped into my head. Are you always this narky? Or just on this journal? Try taking a load off and try to find the positive in people and events rather than focusing on the negative - it might even help with the depression.

And you're in a position to advise me thusly WHY, exactly?

*sigh*

I could respond properly, but anonymous posters really aren't worth the effort.

Fuck off and die, arsehole.

Okay.

The depression? Is because I'm both infertile and recovering from a miscarriage. I think that gives me ample cause for moodiness, don't you? I wouldn't normally go round waving my wangsty real life in an LJ discussion like this, but I have this slight issue about other people's misconceptions that I'm still working on.

Point two - this is a RANT post. Ergo, it contains rantage! What were you expecting, tulips and butterflies, or the bloody rainbow bridge?

Point three - hiding behind anonymity is not the way to gain my respect.

Am getting bored of this already, but I thought I would give one last response as you've promptly replied.

Point 1. Okay, you have issues. But a mistake I've seen so many times is using issues as an excuse to be nasty......

Point 2. yes it's a rant post......but there are MANY of them...hence my original comment.....scrolling through gives the impression that everyone and everything in life seems to piss you off

Point 3. the internet IS anonymous...which I suppose is why you post such personal info about yourself on the net and telling perfect strangers that you're infertile/recovering from a miscarriage after just 2 lines of text!.......splashing such personal info around is hardly a way to command respect

Seeing as LJ e-mails me your comments as soon as you make them, my prompt response shouldn't be all that shocking...

I make no secret of who I am, or what's going on in my life. I'd hardly call it "splashing around" when the information is *already* in the public domain in this very journal. And no, I don't use it as an excuse to be nasty. What I *did* do, right here in this thread, was take you waltzing in on your high horse as if you know how to solve all my problems as an excuse to be nasty, and I'll take your foolish persistence as a further excuse to heap scorn on your witterings. My rants are me laughing at the fools out there, nothing more - but if I struck a nerve in your case, you can have my apology.

As for your so-called advice - you might find it better received with a less condescending mode of delivery?

On second thoughts, perhaps I could offer some advice of my own.

Look before you leap.

Kath, Kath,

Don't you know that "RANT" really stands for "Rainbows Allow Nice Thoughts"? Sheesh. This is your live journal. You should know better than to post YOUR OWN THOUGHTS.

Gawd. What a fucktard.

Hello!
You know, I've come across some really fascinating Journals here on LJ. Journals about writing, about authors, about furries, about stand-up comedians, about furry stand up comedians. One thing I have noticed, in my perusal of varying different journals and points of view, is that most often, the person who comments anonymously, without even leaving their username, has nothing positive to say. Nor do they realize that one's LJ is one's own, where one posts whatever thoughts one might have at that time. So, one day, I may post about making macaroni and cheese. The next, I may talk about LOtR. The day after that, I may talk about the fascinating work Robert Ressler and John Douglas have done with VICAP and personality/serial killer profiling. And the next, I may bitch about the ignorant bint my best friend is married to. In fact, avoid my LJ right now, as you obviously don't want your positive vibrations disturbed.
I do hope that you find someplace nice and pretty with multi-coloured unicorn avatars to help brighten your life. Just a suggestion, though?
You've got no right to jump in to someone else's LJ and criticize their posts, their outlook on life, how much they tell people, and so on. You don't know this person. Go back to your perfect little world, and leave those of us who live in the real world the fuck alone.

I've been meaning to ask Kath - who are you? I'm sure I know you from KT/BPOI/Etc., but haven't had the time nor energy to find you.

But, anyway, lovely post. You said what I wanted to.

And I so hope the fucktard is reading these replies. With a multi-pastel-colored unicorn horn up their ass.

Hi Shalyn!
No need for humble; we badgers are too low to the ground for that shite.
Sparkly rainbow anvils?

Always glad to help out a friend!
Just think, the next time you're having to listen to some nincompoop prattle on and on about nothing whatsoever; imagine them coming across a wuvverly pink unicorn with wings in a bee-yooo-tiful meadow. See them going up to pet the pretty ickle oonicorn. See the unicorn suddenly become a ten foot tall coal black horse with fire for its eyes and mane.* See it eat them. Slowly.

Isn't that a wonderful visualization?

*I don't have the 2nd Edition Monster Manual, so I generalized the actual description of the Nightmare. However, if I'm not horribly mistaken, they do eat human flesh. :)
