Bastards!
As if I wasn't fragile enough right now, I've just had the wonderful experience of being turned down for the one decent flat I've found so far simply because I'm childless.

Yes, that's right. I'm being penalised because my babies keep dying.

Fuckin' A, man.

On the plus side, at least I'm not this guy:

I have just been informed that [name removed] who came into the Department to discuss climate change about two weeks ago, and has been causing a nuisance on campus, was arrested and sectioned yesterday.  [Name removed] has since escaped from a secure mental unit and may return to the Hicks Building posing as his twin brother.
There's always someone worse off.  Plenty of someones, really.

Yup, the landlord decided he was going to let it out to families only.

I don't need that kind of landlord, really I don't. [OTOH, I *do* need a roof over my head...]

I... don't get it. What the hell kind of a rule is that? What possible advantage do you gain from a family renting? If anything, I'd say it was better to have childless couples, because children are more likely to be destructive to the flat.

This was never something our agents brought up when we rented our place out (they did suggest having a 'no pets' clause, but we decided to allow pets, seeing as we'd had cats of our own). Nor is it something we came across when looking for a place ourselves. It's just so very very bizarre.

I know people over here who've had the opposite problem - not getting the apartments they want because they DO have children - and there's at least one other flat that sounded interesting that refused to consider couples full-stop. Perhaps they prefer more stable family units (as if kids have EVER made a difference to a shaky relationship....)/non-units than couples?

It's silly of me to take it so personally, but even so it feels like such a kick in the teeth. I'm very, very aware of what February/March last year were like, and not even being a full cycle past the last chemical... bah. Yeah, it's getting to me. But so what. Grief is allowed. And the next flat on the list will be far, far better!
